Gratituesday – Getting away… and my own bed!
By bella | February 19, 2008

This last weekend, Allan and I were able to get away for about 24 hours. We like to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but not necessarily for the traditional “valentine’s” day reasons, but instead because it’s the anniversary of when we met and became engaged. (Yes, you read that right, we met and became engaged in the same weekend – that’s a story for another day). It’s now been four years since that fateful wonderful weekend, and here we are with two more kids (I had one already when I met Allan), and a house and a life I never thought possible (especially the living in Vegas part!)
Anyway, we enlisted the help of Allan’s mother, who agreed to come spend the night with our little ones so we could get out of town for a bit. We are both big fans of Cracker Barrel, so we headed to the nearest town with a CB in it – St. George, Utah. Our plan was to have dinner at Cracker Barrel, go rest and relax for a long night of uninterupted sleep, get up and have brunch at Cracker Barrel, do some shopping and maybe see a movie, and then have dinner at Cracker Barrel. (Yes, that’s a LOT of CB, but when you only get it once a year… well, you have to stock up!)
And, for the most part we stuck to the plan. It was a wonderful getaway… except the “resting, relaxing for a long night of uninterupted sleep” part. Turns out the hotel where we stayed had the WORST beds EVER. It was like laying on a box springs box, instead of a mattress. We both were so tired that we did manage to sleep for a couple of hours, but then woke up feeling miserable, sore, backs full of knots. Not exactly the rest we were hoping for!
After commiserating a little (around 5 a.m.), we decided that we’d try out the sofa bed (we had a mini-suite). Up we got, and out came the sofa bed. And it was better… a little. You KNOW a mattress is bad when a sofa bed mattress is BETTER! But, it wasn’t THAT much better. It was softer and more comfortable, but it was still being supported by a sofa bed frame. So, our next brilliant plan was to move the sofa bed mattress over and place it on the king size bed.
So, near 6 a.m., we moved the mattress over and piled up on top. Ahhhhh… that was definitely better. But, after all that, neither of us could get back to sleep. So, up we got! We got dressed and ready and we checked out of the hotel before 8 a.m. It wasn’t exactly what we planned for our day, but we decided to make the most of it and go have breakfast at Cracker Barrel.
We did a little shopping… headed back to CB for lunch. Went and saw a movie… headed back to CB for an early dinner. Yes, we ate at CB THREE times in ONE day. Even had the same waiter for dinner that we’d had the night before (which means we ate at CB FOUR times in less than 24 hours).
Me? I’m CB’d out. But, it was fun! And yummy! And a mostly relaxing getaway! And restful in a “we didn’t get much sleep” kind of way. And we finished conversations! And made some plans for around our house! And bought Martha some yummy clothes at Penny’s President’s Day close-out sale. And then we missed our kids, and couldn’t wait to get home!
And last night…when we went to bed… it was SO nice to climb up into OUR bed, OUR sheets, OUR comfy place.
So, today, I’m thankful for my bed, and the sleep I got LAST night!
And for the weekend away with my love. I can’t wait to do it again… only we’ll be trying a new hotel next time.
P.S. Please join me and my friend Laura in Gratituesday! Grab the Gratituesday image, and post to your blog what YOU are thankful for this week, and then link us up in comments! We’d love to share in your thankfulness!

OK Char, Cracker Barrel is good, but come on…. FOUR times???
Not keeping up on my own blog right now (read: haven’t even started one), so don’t mind me while I hijack your comments to leave my own gratitude:
I’m truly thankful for a friend like you who is so thoughtful and faithful.

Ah, I’m thankful that you could have a nice getaway with your hubby.
You should buy stock in CB.

Or better yet, y’all should buy a CB franchise license and open one there in Vegas…
