WFMW – wait until they are ready…

    By bella | March 12, 2008

Ok, this isn’t a real WFMW post – at least not in the traditional sense. I mostly want to brag about my kiddo and the recent training we’ve been doing. The kind of training that involves pull-ups and no more diapers and fun things like new Thomas the Train undies.

With Samuel, we waited until he was almost four, because every time we tried to get him interested, it just didn’t go well. He finally decided he was ready around 3 years, 9 months, and the training went so well we knew it could never be repeated. Or, so we thought.

But, lil Allan decided he’d prove us wrong. We started working with him two weeks ago, and in just a few short days, we graduated to NO MORE DIAPERS (lil Allan’s words, repeated several times a day). He is staying dry 99% of the time, even waking up from a lot of naps and overnights dry.

Because of Samuel, we knew we were going to wait until lil Allan was ready, and we weren’t going to push it. Because of the cost of diapers, we were rather hoping it’d be sooner, but we were willing to settle for later, if it meant the transition/training could go smoothly and easily. I’d say we got it just right.

We get to do this one more time with Martha in a couple of years. I expect it might be a little different with her being female and all, but I’m going to stick with what’s been working. Even if that means we spend money on a few more month’s worth of diapers. It’s what works for us… what works for you?

Oh, and one more thing – YAY, we’re only buying diapers for ONE now!

I’m with ya– my DD was nearly 4 before she was finally trained, and we got all kinds of unsolicited advice about “forcing” her. I’ll admit we did have to push her a little in the end or else she might still be in diapers now. But what’s the point of stressing the child and the adults out by a certain calendar age if they’re not ready?

Yay!! We’ve been day-trained here for quite a while, but nighttime training is coming s-l-o-w-l-y! In fact, I need to buy more pull-ups today. Sigh.

Yea! It sounds like he is SO ready and doing GREAT! Waiting until they’re ready really is the best way to do it. A lot less stress for everyone! (Except the people who think you should be potty training your 11 month old…but we’ll just let them have their stress.) :)

I totally agree. Our son was so not ready for p.t.’ing until he was 3 1/2. Lots of people will look down their nose at you for not having your child trained according to “their” schedule, but only YOU know when your child is truly ready. I fully believe we save ourselves and our children a lot of undue stress by letting them take the lead (although there’s no harm in lots of encouragement beforehand!).
I’ll step down from my soap box now! And yay for you!
